Employment & Vocational TrainingEmployment & Vocational Training

Employment is a critical issue for many around the world. While youth and adults alike have the energy, creativity and relevant skills, many cannot find jobs. Unemployment is greater than 50 percent in many countries, and opportunities for productive, stable and rewarding work have grown increasingly limited.

YMCAs in every region of the world are committed to developing comprehensive solutions to address high unemployment rates. Through career counseling, skills development and business management training, YMCA programs help ensure that people have the ability and opportunity to engage in positive and productive work.

The East Jerusalem YMCA (EJY) is the largest youth organization working in the West Bank and Gaza. Established in 1948, EJY provides vital educational, recreational and employment opportunities to more than 50,000 Palestinian youth and families each year. Over 65 percent of the Palestinian population is under the age of 22. Seventy percent of these young people are living at or below the poverty line.

One of the greatest challenges facing the region is the high unemployment rate, which currently exceeds 50 percent in most cities due to the country’s political and economic situation. This problem is particularly daunting for youth and young graduates who lack the skills and contacts to obtain and/or create regular employment. EJY responded to these challenges by creating innovative vocational training, job placement and small enterprise development programs to help young men and women develop their skills and find employment.
