This position is located onsite at our Palmer Ranch YMCA in Sarasota FL. 8301 Potter Park Dr.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Aquatics Director is responsible for the overall operations and safety for all participants in and around the aquatics programs. He/She supervises all pool activities and ensures the development and implementation of high-quality programming to serve our community and its needs. The Aquatics Director leads by example and ensures the appropriate performance and conduct of all lifeguards, swim instructors, and other direct reports. The Aquatics Director will operate the department to meet or exceed budgetary goals, as well as handle all administrative responsibilities.

Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Relevant experience: 5 years (Preferred)
  • At least 5 years of experience as a lifeguard required.
  • 3 years of supervisory experience including team management.
  • Working understanding of public pool operation and compliance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Successfully complete State of Florida Criminal History Background Check requirements as well as meet the Association’s policies on background screening.
  • Adhere to drug/alcohol/smoke free workplace policy.
Essential Functions
  • Recruit, train, develop, schedule and direct lifeguards and swim lesson instructors.
  • Conduct reviews and evaluation of staff performance. Help develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Develop and implement consistent and frequent in- service training for lifeguard staff.
  • Establish new program activities and expand program(s) within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Provide ongoing evaluation of current aquatics programs, staff, and services including frequent quick checks to ensure quality and close any gaps related to safety and protocols.
  • Assist with compilation of program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information, may organize and schedule program registrations.
  • Coordinates use of programming for activities and events.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  • Attend Aquatics Cabinet meetings.
  • Oversee the operations of the pool including maintaining pool equipment, monitoring water chemistry, and keeping up to date records.
  • Assures compliance with state and local regulations. Ensures that program standards are met, and safety procedures are followed.
  • Knowledge of water testing procedures and ability to test water as instructed.
  • Knowledge of proper water balance in accordance with County Standards.
  • Maintain constant supervision of the pool during assigned shift.
  • Direct all pool maintenance concerns immediately.
  • Review timesheets and manage payroll in a timely manner for the aquatics department.
  • Reports to work at the scheduled time and works as scheduled.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Extended exposure to sunlight and outdoor elements as well as warm and humid outdoor environments is expected. Position works independently and without supervision for long periods of time. Exposure to chlorine and other pool chemicals.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the Aquatics Director is regularly required to climb in and out of all guard chairs, stand and sit for long periods of time and get in and out of the pool as needed. This person is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, equipment or controls, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Required Certifications

CERTIFICATIONS AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Lifeguard Certification required
  • YUSA Swim Lesson Certification (required within 90 days of employment)
  • Lifeguard Instructor Certification (required within 90 days of employment)
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) (required to complete within 90 days of employment)
  • Completion of the YMCA’s Blood Borne Pathogens and Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training annually
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications
  • Additional Training Classes as Recommended by Supervisor
